Food and Drink

At Norwich there is a big selection of places where you can have a quiet drink or you can eat different kinds of food. In general, there are a lot of places that offer fast food at midday in teh town centre, such as hamburguers, pizza, sandwiches, etc. Apart from that, there are other restaurants at the department stores or shopping centres like Chapelfield Mall. For instance Mackintosh's canteen or Tootsies are a good choice if you want more elaborated and healthier food.
In the town, there are good cafes to enjoy a quiet coffee or tea in the afternoon, like the Cocoa cafe at Guildhall where you can also eat some cakes and biscuits or sandwiches.
In the evening, you can have a drink or dinner in any pub around the town and we recommend the restaurants or pubs by the riverside. The pubs there are crowded with young people who go there to have a chat and enjoy the music.

"HISTORICAL PLACES"

Hi guys,
We're going to give you all the information we've picked up about "HISTORICAL PLACES".
The Castle: It was commissioned to be built by William Rufus in 1067 and it was finished in 1120. Nowadays you can find different exhibitions, and Art Gallery there...
The Norwich Protestant Cathedral: there you can see very beautiful Cloisters and if you look up at the roof you will find eight green men sculptures representing Fertility.
There are 13 different churches in Norwich.
The oldest street is Elm Street. It's a narrow street that contains antiques and old shops. It has an amazing road made of stones called "Cobbles".
If you want to see an open air play go to Whiffler Theatre.
In Riverside Walk there're wooden blocks covered by metal that are used to remember the people who lived there 200 years ago. It's called "Quiet Street".
If you want to have a pint in probably the oldest pub in Norwich, go to Adam and Eve.
An interesting fact about Norwich is that the houses used to belong to the different churches depending on where they were situated.
By the river, the houses on the right side are newer than the ones on the left.
The Country and Eastern building was a skating rink and now you can buy antique stuff there.
In Norwich you can find a lot of building made of flint which is a black shiny stone.
And the last thing but not the least that we would like to mention is the "Royal Arcade", which is a beautiful corridor full of shops, that used to be a horse stable and was built in the 1800s. Gentlemen passed through it when they went back home after spending the day in the Inns.

Historic Facts

Hello
Yerterday we went to Norwich and we visitied some historical places.

1.- The Castle: .It was built by Normans in 1067. It has changed a lot in recent years. According to a woman it used to be the main bus station and taxi rank of Norwich. However nowadays it holds impressive exhibitions of fine art, archeology and natural history. This includes the largest collection of paintings by the unique Norwich School of Artist. The buses 25 and 35 stop in front of it

2.- Elm Hill street. It is the most famous street of Norwich because it is the oldest street. The road is made of stones, the roofs are thatched with a material that it was used for the first time. There are shops where the collectors can exchange things.

3.- Bridewell Museum: it is near St Andrew's street. Now it is closed for improvements. But it was built as a private house for rich merchants. But by the end of the 16th century it had become a prision. Now it has collections and displays.

4.- Guildhall: It is made of flint. It is a coffee bar nowadays, but it was built to house the different areas of goverment. By 1974 the sheriff's office was there and the Tourist Information Office was there from 1986 till 2001.

If you like History you can go and visit them.

People

They are in general quite friendly, and above all old people "waste" their time explaining everything. Women become mothers really young and they have 3-4 children, almost unheard of in Spain. We were surprised too to see many homeless, some of them were sitting next to the Cathedral, a typical tourist place. And at the end of the day they were in the main street as well.Alicia told us that they get money from the Government if they have dogs.So all of them had.
Another point to take into account is that there is nobody around when the shops are closed. And the bars and restaurants close too, everybody go then to pubs to drink, no more food.

ENTERTAINMENT IN NORWICH

Norwich is a great city where entertainment is guaranteed. We are going to include some aspects that can help you to make the most of the city. ENJOY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

* CINEMAS. If you are a Harry Potter fan, you can see the latest film in almost every cinema of the city, for example on the top floor of the Castle Mall. Other options are Ice Age 3 or the Hangover. For less commercial films you should go to the Cinema City, it is also a good opportunity to drink coffee in its nice garden.

*THEATRES. You can't do better than go to TheTheatre Royal. Today is the last show of Michael Mclntyre and unfortunately the tickets are all sold out. But in the coming days there will be other nice shows such us Chitty Chitty Bang Band. In these warm summer days, it is worth visiting The Whiffler Theatre, in the Castle Garden. It is an open air theatre where you can enjoy both a nice play and the views of the castle at night. On the blackboard there you can find further information.

*BOAT TRIP. Summer is here and if it doesn't rain you can take a boat trip on the river and enjoy a new way of visiting Norwich.

* MUSEUMS AND MONUMENTS. Norwich is a Norman city. Here you can visit the old Castle, built in 1067 with its museum and art gallery with different exhibitions. The City of Norwich has got two magnificient cathedrals.

*CHILDREN. Inspire Discovery Centre, inside St. Michael's Church, is the science option for our children, where they can practice English and Science (the essence of CLIL, hehehe)

*BOWLING. Next to railway station

Chill out in Norwich.

There are plenty of oportunities to relax in Norwich after a hectic shopping spree, or a busy day at campus!!! Here are some ideas:

Norwich is scattered with beautiful parks and gardens, where the grass is green, the flowers are colourful, and if you're lucky, the sky will be blue too. English parks are meant to be used and enjoyed, not just looked at, and you are welcome to sit on the grass and have a picnic, or just lie down and relax.
  • - Chappelfield gardens are within walking distance from the Chappelfield Shopping Centre, and it has a Mexican Canteen in it, where you can eat or just have a drink.
  • - Castle Museum, at Castle Hill, is surrounded by a green area where you can rest after your visit to the museum. There is also an open theatre called the Whiffler Theatre wehre you can sit on the benches and chill out by the trees when there are no plays or shows.
  • - You can drop yourself by the oldest pub in Norwich, Adam and Eve, just behind the cathedral, and have a local beer with the locals.
  • - A beautiful place to have evening tea is the Hostry cafe, at the Cathedral, next to the wonderful cloister.

British Pubs are wonderful places to have a quiet drink in a cosy athmosphere, have a meal, or even a wild time, depending on your mood and choice, here are some nice pubs where you can chill out:

  • - The Briton's Arms, at Elmhill Street, is very near a cenenary Elm, surrounded by a very quiet area, perfect for chill-out time. This area also features several pubs playing live music at night.
  • - The Belgian Monk Pub, (sorry, we don't know the address, but we'll find out soon) offers a large variety of belgian beers and dishes, which you can enjoy in their beautiful and spacious garden.
  • - Finally, the Riverside, near the Railway Station, offers a nice walk by the river, as well as many pubs and restaurants, at a reasonable price which open till late.

We hope you find this information useful, and that you make the most of your stay in Norwich!!!!

Cheers!!!! Teresa and Elena.
